University Toolkit
University Toolkit
This toolkit aims to educate college students about the safe use of medications and other substances.
Getting Started
The Generation Rx University Toolkit consists of activities, videos, and visual aids designed for use in peer education to teach our key messages. The toolkit also includes a customized activity specifically designed to engage students in Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Ready to go? Follow these three steps:
Step 1: Explore the key messages
featured in the GenRx University Toolkit
Step 2: Review our program recommendations
to help you plan an effective educational program.
Step 3: Browse the available toolkit resources
to build and deliver a Generation Rx program itinerary that aligns with your program goals.
Step 1: Explore the Key Messages
The Generation Rx University Toolkit expands on Generation Rx key messages to focus on three main themes:
- Discuss safe medication practices through proper use, storage, and disposal of medication
- Recognize risks associated with medications, counterfeit pills, and other substances
- Identify strategies for lowering risk of harm associated with medications and other substances
Step 2: Program Recommendations
Audience
This toolkit is appropriate for universal and selective audiences consisting of college-aged students (ages 18 – 25). Examples of populations to engage include students living in residence halls, student athletes, students engaged in fraternity and sorority life or in clubs, and first year students.
Venue
We recommend venues with flexible furniture layouts to support small group discussions and active learning. Note the venue’s available technology, as some resources are in PPT format; each toolkit resource offers suggestions for adapting delivery if technology is limited.
Group Size
The ideal group size is 25 or fewer participants, as it helps maximize interaction between facilitators and participants, which is key for implementing prevention education. If you need to engage large groups, the “Generation Rx University” trivia game adapts well.
Step 3: Toolkit Resources
This toolkit includes several activities, and each activity also incorporates viewing relevant accompanying videos. Some activities discuss a single topic, whereas others discuss multiple topics. We encourage you to select the activity that best aligns with your discussion topic(s). If you prefer delivering these activities virtually, please contact Generation Rx for versions of the resources adapted for virtual delivery.
A typical GenRx University program itinerary includes:
1 Making
introductions to welcome participants
2 Delivering
your selected activity, including playing the accompanying video when the activity suggests (listed below, classified by the discussion topic(s) and the estimated length of time)
3 Wrapping up
through answering questions and providing resources

Sample Program Itineraries
The Generation Rx University Trivia Game (see above for resources) focuses on safe medication practices and medication safety principles. It is also an activity that typically adapts well to varying group sizes and levels of participant engagement.
The activity, An Orientation to Generation Rx University (see above for resources) includes discussion of multiple topics organized by modules (each module includes watching a video followed by a group discussion). Delivering the modules across a series of micro-learning sessions is one option for achieving multiple touchpoints with a single audience.
- Program 1 (20 – 25 minutes): Module 1, Prescription Opioids
- Program 2 (20 – 25 minutes): Module 2, Prescription Stimulants
- Program 3 (20 – 25 minutes): Module 3, Prescription Sedatives
- Program 4 (20 – 25 minutes): Module 4, Safe Medication Practices
Use the Generation Rx University Trivia Game (see above for resources) as a conversation starter at tabling events. Review the trivia questions, print the questions relevant to your audience (or utilize a mobile device to play the game with the PPT slide deck), and offer small prizes (e.g., sunglasses, t-shirts, water bottle stickers) for participation.
