Ohio State College of Nursing and College of Veterinary Medicine
Because medication misuse remains an interdisciplinary public health issue, we recognize that all healthcare professionals play a role as medication safety leaders. Through a partnership with the College of Nursing and College of Veterinary Medicine, we co-created and co-piloted discipline-specific versions of Generation Rx Ambassadors with cohorts of Ohio State nursing and veterinary medicine students. Extending our reach of GenRx education into these fields would not be possible without support from Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services and our founding sponsor, the Cardinal Health Foundation.

Ohio State Extension and Generation Rx
As people live longer and healthier lives, we know most will take at least one prescription medication. Therefore, preventing medication-related problems in older adults is critical. Recently, GenRx partnered with OSU Extension to provide education to older adult audiences across Ohio using the GenRx Older Adult Toolkit. OSU Extension Offices in 12 counties received funds to support GenRx education, providing an opportunity for extension educators to support local community needs and reach over 800 older adults with medication safety education. This project was funded by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and published in Frontiers in Public Health.
Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery (HECAOD)
HECAOD is powered through a collaboration between the College of Social Work, the College of Pharmacy, and the Office of Student Life at The Ohio State University. Our partnership with HECAOD helps advance their mission of providing resources in support of prevention, intervention, and recovery services on campus as it relates to medications and related substances. For example, our partnership with HECAOD and the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation helped create a five-year mini-grant program, supporting 19 campuses with implementing GenRx education to over 8,000 students. College peer educators led many of the GenRx programs, with study outcomes published in a public report.
“We need to educate students on the realities of veterinary practice, including medication diversion, as well as how to talk to owners about opioid misuse prevention, safe medication storage and disposal, and appropriate storage of medications. Generation Rx offers us a way to do this and has allowed us to partner with our colleagues in the Colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, and Nursing.”
